Hey! Dash here,
It definitely doesn’t look it, well at least not from where I’m sitting but Spring should be here soon and with a band new season comes brand new trends, some gorgeously spectacular, some staples carrying on from past seasons and some questionable newbies, but not to worry because Dash is here to help you figure out what’s what.
As you’ve probably guessed from the title, today I’ll be chatting to you about neon. A bit of a blast from the past, I suppose and a very out there trend. It’s been seen relatively all over this coming Spring/Summer catwalks too.
Anybody else remember that Spring/Summer period back in 2012 when neon and illuminous colours were just everywhere? Yeah… not good times, things were very full on when it came to the trend and when I look back I cringe thinking about my full neon orange tracksuit, that at the time, I thought was the best thing since sliced bread. Now though, I think we can learn from those past mistakes and do neon better this time around. Well, I’m hoping to anyway.
The main thing, I think to remember when approaching a trend like this is that it’s meant to have an element of fun in it.
When taking on this trend some people say you have got to be brave, but can’t the same be said for trying out any new fashion trends? Working neon colours into an outfit, especially after such a long time of typically dark Autumn/Winter colours will definitely get you noticed and make you stand out, but who cares. As long as you’re happy not much else matters. Sure, it can be a risky thing to try but if people never took any risks when it came to fashion we’d never move forward, would we?
Getting into any trend, I always think it’s better to start small, with things like jewellery, hats, shoes and bags, accessories in general I suppose and this trend is no different.
Picture some cute neon accessories with a simple white dress.
It works quite well but isn’t over the top or gaudy looking. Using white as a backdrop for your neon accessories is a really good idea. It means you can mix and match different neon colours and not worry about your outfit looking cluttered.
I love to build up on the accessories and just have some fun with it!
If you want to go full on neon, try using more than one colour, but lay off on the jewellery, keep it simple, maybe have one or two accessories but nothing over the top, let the colours speak to themselves.
When it comes to jewellery you can easily layer necklaces and chokers or bracelets of different colours with a simple main outfit colour, like white and get a really lovely, fun Spring/Summer ensemble.
When trying out the trend through accessories, your best bet is to steer clear of patterned clothes, a lot of the time you just end up with a really cluttered and mis-matched looking outfit, if you don’t. In some cases it can work well, say if you have some shorts with a daisy pattern on them and a white t-shirt. A neon yellow choker or necklace, or maybe even some nail varnish can work really well together.
I’ll just pause here for a second and say this now, if you hadn’t already picked up on it, white can be key to succeeding with this trend. This is great, because white is always a Spring/Summer colour!
Makeup can also be a cool way to dip your feet into this trend, with lipsticks, which can look really great on darker skinned girls or cute neon nail varnish.
If you want to go a little further into to the trend and wearing neon coloured pieces is where you’re at, you can have a lot of fun! But don’t get to over the top with it, we don’t want to be taking any trips to the 80’s…
If you’re planning to wear a neon coloured one piece, like a play suit or dress, I’d say choose a completely different contrasting colour for you accessories (maybe keep all your accessories the same colour.) and break all the neon up with a really different simple colour like white or denim
If going for any other clothes, try to break up the neon colours and mix and match with normal pieces, like denim jackets.
So, Neon for Spring/Summer, cool or cringe?
I’d say cool, if you do it right that is.
Don’t go over the top and clutter your outfit with loads of different neons and remember to include other colours too, also if you’re not feeling the full trend, stick to the accessories, they can really make an outfit. Oh, and white is a must when in doubt of what to team your neons with.
Hope this inspired you!
